The Government of Bangladesh is committed to enhancing research and the application of advanced technology for the preservation of forests and the environment, said Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources. She emphasized the necessity of ensuring the proper utilization of scientific research and technological advancements in combating climate change and protecting the environment. Modern research, she noted, plays a crucial role in safeguarding forest resources and promoting sustainable management. Expanding the scope of research is imperative for ensuring a sustainable forestry sector.

She made these remarks today (Tuesday) while addressing a discussion with officials and employees of the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) in Chattogram as the chief guest.

The Advisor stressed the importance of fostering innovation to address the challenges posed by climate change. She instructed the authorities to conduct research on the impact of social forestry on natural forests. Additionally, she called for increased research on biodiversity conservation and wildlife management. She further emphasized the need to expand studies on the development and management of non-timber forest resources such as bamboo, cane, and medicinal plants. Research should also be intensified on enhancing the productivity of mangrove forests and optimizing the use of coastal lands.

The discussion was presided over by BFRI Director A. K. M. Showkat Alam Mazumder. Among the distinguished attendees were Molla Rezaul Karim, Conservator of Forests, Chattogram Region and Md. Aminul Islam, Director of the Bangladesh Forest Academy, along with BFRI officials and staff.

Following the meeting, the Advisor held discussions with officials of the Bangladesh Rubber Board. She urged them to work towards the sustainable development of the country’s rubber industry and provided necessary directives in this regard.
